LONG-RANGE PLAN - - - 2004 – 2006

MISSION STATEMENT:

The Alliance Area Preservation Society will restore and preserve the Haines House as a multi-cultural center to address the educational, historical and social needs of the Alliance community.

I. Organization and Finance

A. Maintain community interest and involvement and build volunteer base

1. Establish and empower the position of volunteer coordinator to help complete projects on a timely basis and give volunteers a better sense of accomplishment in their work.

2. Begin personal recruitment of volunteers by board members and other current volunteers. A 'buddy system' can be created for workdays and other projects.

3. Promote involvement in AAPS activities through promotion with other organizations such as Rodman Library, YMCA, YWCA, Neighborhood Center, Chamber and area churches.

4. Create a volunteer 'wall of fame' to recognize volunteer accomplishment

B. Promote and dramatically improve multicultural involvement

1. Actively recruit among Alliance's African-American community

2. Tie-in with specific programming and activities

C. Insure the financial stability of the organization through continued community fundraising and new grant writing opportunities

1. Strengthen and build membership base and fundraising appeals

2. Explore new grant possibilities with National Endowment for the Humanities, Institute of Museum and Library Services, Ohio Humanities Council and other sources. Explore additional grants from local and regional foundations.

3. Install and maintain recognition plaque in Entry Hall or Dining Room

D. Establish regular visitation hours

1. Explore best way to have regular public visiting hours, perhaps in conjunction with other local sites (Castle, Hartzel House, and Science Hill, etc.).

E. Establish Collections Policy and record keeping procedures.

1. Create Curatorial/Research Committee to study and implement policy and conduct research.

2. Create Collection Policy and establish inventory process.

3. Determine exhibition/display practices and create exhibitions.

4. Continue research into history of Haines House and Abolitionist activity.

II. Renovation and Maintenance

A. Continue renovation projects begun in 2003 and finish the following items:

1. Repair chimney in parlor to halt water leak

2. Repair parlor stovepipe

3. Repair attic portholes

4. Install motion detector lights

5. Caulk, glaze and paint the rest of the exterior windows

6. Repaint dining room baseboard

7. Paint top portico floor

8. Repair plaster and paint the closet area in the library

9. Complete the rest of the items on the room work sheets

10. Install exterior back steps handrail

11. Install tempered glass in gallery

12. Install light at back kitchen door facing Haines St.

13. Plaster and paint the closet under the front stair

B. Begin new renovation projects in 2004

1. Office

a. Repair baseboards and step

b. Paint

c. Install low-pile carpet

d. Install telephone

e. Furnish

2. Library

a. Paint

b. Install paper blinds and valances on spring rods

c. Place an area rug

d. Use desk lamps and floor lamps

e. Set up showcase

f. Add tables, chairs and bookcases

g. Install used computer

3. Interior Back Staircase

a. Remove carpet

b. Paint

c. Install thin handrail

4. Attic

a. Drywall and replace plaster

b. Whitewash

c. Repair floor, scrub and leave natural

5. Old Kitchen

a. Remove south exterior door

b. Install drywall on walls and ceiling and replace/repair baseboards, woodwork and chair rail

c. Repair floor and clean, leave natural

d. Open access door to dining room

e. Renovate stove

f. Decorating to be determined

6. Create a Landscaping Master Plan and begin plantings

a. Herb garden

b. Flower gardens

c. Shrubbery and trees

C. Future Projects

1. Handicapped accessible bathroom

2. New kitchen remodeling

3. Permanent ramp

4. Renovate yellow bedroom

III. Education and Programming

A. Improve existing educational programs through expansion of volunteer base (including recruitment of younger people and members of the African American community), subjects and materials.

1. Train more docents for both school and adult tours

2. Make a videotape of the second floor available on the first floor for those who have problems getting upstairs.

3. Improve our current school/children's tour by adding more hands-on experiences.

4. Supply more information about local history in the mid to late 19th century in Alliance for use in all tours.

5. Provide more opportunities for our African American Community to use the Haines House for programs and events to explore and celebrate local African American history.

a. Invite people to bring old family pictures for a display.

B. Create new programs and materials to provide more opportunities for learning.

1. Provide in-school programs at the Middle and High School level because scheduling field trips are becoming more difficult to schedule for time and financial reasons.

2. Explore local promotion and sponsorship of Ohio History Day.

3. Create a Power-Point presentation for schools, clubs and community groups.

4. Plan a fugitive slave reenactment program.

IV. Community Involvement and Public Relations

A. Promote networking among other historical and community organizations

1. Build relationships with other local historic groups such as Hartzel House, Glamorgan Castle, Science Hill, Sebring Historical Society.

a. Plan joint meetings/ member activities

b. Create a self-guided tour of area site

2. Build relationship with regional Underground Railroad-related groups, particularly those in neighboring communities, and maintain relationship with the Friends of Freedom Society/Ohio Underground Railroad Association

3. Build relationship with groups such as local garden clubs and interested social organization to build use of Haines House as a meeting space and support the renovation and ongoing programs in the House.

4. Seek continued involvement of Mount Union College and other educational organizations to support renovation, research and public programming.

B. Enhance public relations and marketing efforts to build awareness of the Haines House and increase attendance for tours and programs.

1. Decide on a name for the Haines House site.

2. Install on-site and directional signs in community to guide patrons to the House.

3. Create a 4-color information brochure about the Haines House for distribution throughout the community and region

4. Improve web site to include such elements as a virtual tour of the House and links to other Underground Railroad and local sites.

C. Build neighborhood and general community good will through improved communication and special events.

1. Better inform neighbors of activities going at the House

2. Plan a historically relevant, but fun activities such as a neighborhood 'block party,' a tea party, a historical craft and/or music event.

3. Increase contact with local media to promote programs and events.
