Our First Work Day at Haines House
The House was still in pretty tough shape. There was no power
or water, but we wanted to start cleaning up. Most of the work
was concentrated on the first floor and cleaning up the yard.
These pictures show the condition of some of the rooms.
The attic where fugitive slaves hid hasn't changed
much in 150 years. You can still see char marks from a fire in
the House during the 1940s. One of the Haines House group's current
members was the young girl who inadvertently started that fire.
She's much more careful , now.
..
The first floor rooms were in the worst condition.
Here you see the East Parlor. You can see partially stripped
wallpaper, but the worse part is the plaster missing from the
south wall (which you can't see in this picture)..
.
The West Parlor has water
damge behind the bookcase (on left) and around the wood stove
pipe.
.
The "new" kitchen, built when the
House was divided into two apartments around 1915, shows signs
of break-ins and hasty repairs. Fortunately, much of the Haines
House, particularly the second floor is in good shape. They built
'em to last 160 years ago. It also helped that a new roof was
installed in 1992.
