Our First Open House - September 22, 2001

We invited the community to get a "before" look at the Haines House on Saturday, September 22, 2001. It was also the 149th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation
.
We greeted almost 200 people on our first day ever open to the public. This is the view down the front staircase. The guy in the green shirt is Board member Frank Barrett.
Evelyn Brown was one of our group's first members, and has been a community activist for years. She is the spiritual center of our organization. Here she is showing some of her African American heritage material to our visitors. .

Maryjo Hepler (also in a green shirt) is shown here talking with a family in the West Parlor. This will be one of the rooms that will be filled with period furniture that was originally acquired by Eric Johannesen, and deeded with the Haines House.
Kay Brown (center, not wearing a green shirt) greeted guests near our punch and cookies in the East Parlour.
Here are more folks touring through the African American heritage display in the Dining Room. That nice lady waving is Karen Perone (with her husband, James), webmaster at Rodman Public Library. We are indebted to both Karen and Rodman Library for hosting the www.haineshouse.org site. Thanks!
