ALLIANCE AREA PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Minutes of the September 25, 2000 meeting

In attendance: Evelyn Brown, Adele Carmen, Chip Cameron, Jennifer Crist, Ginny Daniel, Jesse Harry, Gordon Harrison, Pat Sacha, Maxine Haupt, Maryjo Hepler, Frank Barrett, Robb Hyde, Karen Twyman, Martha McClaugherty

President Robb Hyde called the meeting to order at 7:07 PM.

Treasurer's Report (Gordon Harrison): $599.75 before 9-25-00. As of 9-25-00 the balance is $725.75.

President's Report (Robb Hyde): Our attorney, Robert Hunter, Jr. indicates that legally there are no changes concerning the assessment and sale of the Haines House. The Straubhaars have settled with the mortgage company. Robb had lunch with Beth Straubhaar and her mother and heard her story about the house. An appraisal is scheduled for September 29th. Once a price is decided, the judge has awarded the HHURP exclusive right to buy the property. Robb arranged for the Straubhaars to show the house to any interested HHURP members this Saturday at 11 AM. There was some discussion about how to get the word out about that to members who were not present.

Old Business

Maryjo Hepler, Communications Committee Chair, reminded members on the committee that there was a committee! These people are:

Jenny Crist, Pat Keller, Frank Barrett, Jean Webster, Maxine Haupt and Karen Twyman. Maryjo sent around a sign-up sheet for those willing to give a program.

Members need new copies of the Mission Statement without reference to a family connection to Ulysses S. Grant.

Jesse Harry said that the cost of a Haines House brass medallion would be $7.00 each with a minimum order of 250. There was no action taken.

Robb said that Vince Marian and John Blaser were enthusiastic about the Haines House being the official bicentennial project for Alliance. Perhaps there would be CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) funds available after the first of the year.

New Business

Pat Sacha was concerned that people were loosing interest in the project because of the legal hassles. It was decided that a letter should be sent to everyone who has shown an interest once we have some specifics. Jesse Harry suggested that if someone showed an interest in donating but was hesitant to give money now because we do not own the house yet, we could ask them to sign a pledge letter. Martha suggested that our treasurer, Gordon Harrison draft a letter in consultation with Bob Hunter, Jr. He agreed to do so.

Robb announced that the Ohio Association of Historical Societies and Museums would hold its annual meeting November 3 and 4, 2000 in Columbus. Jesse Harry is planning to attend.

The next meeting will be October 23, 2000.
