ALLIANCE AREA PRESERVATION SOCIETY
Minutes of the October 23, 2000 Meeting
In Attendance: Joe Zelasko, Gordon Harrison, Kay Brown,
Vivian Snodgrass, Jennifer Crist, Pat Sacha, L Jean Webster,
Maxime Haupt, Evelyn Brown, Chip Cameron, Frank Barrett, Karen
Twyman, Maryjo Hepler, Jesse Harry, Martha McClaugherty, and
Robb Hyde, President.
The meeting was held at Christ United Methodist Church, 470 E.
Broadway, Alliance and was called to order by President Robb
at 7:07 PM. The Secretary read the Minutes of the September 25
meeting and one correction was made: present was Adele Cameron,
not Carmen.
President's Report
Robb went with the appraiser, Kathleen Wieschaus to see the Haines
House antiques stored in a barn in Ravenna. Approximately nine
people toured the Haines House with owner Kevin Straubhaar on
September 30. Someone commented that it was a good thing there
was a seven-year old roof on the house! Robb serves on the Historic
Preservation Committee and wanted the HHURRC members to know
that a Mr. Dean Byers had presented the Committee with a plan
to turn the former Lutheran Church on Linden Ave and Cambridge
into a museum. It was noted that that plan has been in the works
for years. Robb created new letterhead with board members' names
and passed around a few copies.
Treasurer's Report
Gordon Harrison reported a balance of $774.75 in our checking
account. He completed the pledge letter decided upon at the September
meeting and members received several copies.
Old Business
The appraisal by Kathleen Wieschaus determined a value of $35,000
for the Haines House and $9000 for the antiques. The Straubhaars
have their own appraisal. Our lawyer, Bob Hunter Jr. suggested
we "share" the two appraisals and seek common ground.
There was an extended discussion about the antiques and the deed
covenant. Robb reminded us that we would have ninety days from
the day we make an agreement to settle on the particulars. Joe
Zelasko, who was a member of the Alliance Historical Society
when the arrangements were made with the Historical Society to
oversee the deed covenants, stated that the Struabhaars should
be held accountable for the missing pieces of furniture.
A motion was made by Jesse Harry and seconded by Maxine Haupt
that any business to be transacted (reference to negotiating
a purchase price for the house) between now and the next meeting
could be done through the executive committee. The motion passed
unanimously.
Communications Committee
Maryjo reported that there is now a database of 45 organizations.
Members of the committee will be contacting the organizations
about having a Haines House program. The importance of getting
pledges was stressed.
Jesse announced he had received a form that confirms our status
as a 501 (C) 3 organization.
New Business
Kay Brown volunteered to write thank you letters to the appraisers.
Joe Zelasko and Jenny Crist will find a place for us to meet.
Future meeting dates are: Nov. 27, Dec. 18, Jan 22 and Feb. 26.
