ALLIANCE AREA PRESERVATION SOCIETY
Minutes of the Meeting - May 23, 2005 at 7:00 p.m.
In attendance - Patricia Sacha, Maryjo Hepler, Gordon Harrison, Beth Gray, Kay Brown, Jenni Crist, Maxine Haupt, Robb Hyde, Mike Aeling and Ginny Daniel.
President's Report - Kay called the meeting to order.
Treasurer's Report - Gordon indicated that we have received $9,460.00 to be used toward the repointing - it has already been paid to Campbell Masonry Restoration. We received $416.75 from school tours this spring. We have a balance of approximately $6,000.00 in the checking account and approximately $30,000.00 in the savings account.
Renovation Report - Maryjo reported that 1) Campbell wants to coordinate the repair of the concrete front porch with B. Koehn who will be fixing the pillar; 2) Mike Pauli has roughed in the wiring in the old kitchen and the attic; 3) Mike Aeling will put in the attic windows and provide support under the old kitchen floor; 4) members of the landscaping committee went to Hale Farm to get ideas about landscaping and gardens, parlor decorating, flooring, and kitchen items; 5) Maryjo and Kay scrubbed the cast iron stove which is dated approximately 1890 - they wondered if we should sell it and use the money toward a reproduction of an 1850 stove that we could use safely in the old kitchen - we will discuss that option at our next meeting; 6) we have received $1,000.00 grants from 2 area garden clubs to use in our landscaping plans - the landscaping committee will be meeting soon to begin gathering ideas for our lot.
Carnation Week House Tours - Kay has been meeting with JoAnne Dagenhardt to plan Carnation Week tours and activities at the house. They are hoping to get a traveling trunk of items from John Mattox, our annual meeting speaker. Maryjo also indicated that the Ohio State Historical Society has trunks available. The house will be open for tours on August 13th-19th and on the 21st from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. It will not be open on Saturday due to the parade and Carnation Days in the Park. Maryjo indicated the Renovation Committee will be in charge of cleaning the house prior to Carnation Week and will set up tables and chairs in appropriate places. Gordon has talked with John Benincasa and the mistake in the first printing of the brochure will be corrected in the next printing.
Fundraising - Maryjo suggested that people on the e-mail list who do not help with the Saturday work sessions might be willing to help with fundraising activities. She will send an e-mail to them regarding that idea.
New Business - 1) Robb reported he had taken Stark County Genealogical Society members and four Haines family descendants, Curtis Grant Haines of Boise, Idaho, Dwaine Brugger and Casey Grant of Washington Township, and Hal Grant of Dalton, on a tour of the home. Curtis had brought along a scrapbook of items about Chauncey Haines, a great-grandson of Jonathan Ridgeway Haines. Maryjo suggested we include it in our family history collection; 2) Robb also reported the first Sheriff's sale had been held for the vacant lot next door and that there were no bids on it. The second sale will be held June 8th - if there are no bidders at that time, the lot will be ours. We will need to pay current taxes on it; 3) Kay stated that she had received a letter from the Martin Luther King Day Parade Committee asking if we would participate in the parade again this year. It was agreed by everyone that we should - Kay will ask Robb about driving again; 4) Kay indicated that there are two board positions open at this time - we need to replace Jesse Harry and also Danese Martin who has resigned due to work and family duties. We appreciate the service that Danese has given. Kay suggested that Mike Aeling and Elayne Dunlap be their replacements. Mike agreed that he would accept the position. Maryjo will contact Elayne to see if she is interested; 5) Pat Sacha will be working on starting a focus group with Pat Lewis and Evelyn Brown.
Dates to Remember - June 4th and 18th - 9:00 to 12:00 - work days
June 27th - next Board Meeting
Adjournment - Beth moved that we adjourn and Maxine seconded the motion. All approved.
Respectfully submitted,
Ginny Daniel, Secretary
