ALLIANCE AREA PRESERVATION SOCIETY
Minutes of the Meeting - June 27, 2005 at 7:00 p.m.
In attendance - Maryjo Hepler, Gordon Harrison, Kay Brown, Jenni Crist, Maxine Haupt, Robb Hyde, Mike Aeling, Martha McClaugherty, Carolyn Miller and Ginny Daniel. Patricia and Frank Sacha brought former Board Member, Karen Twyman and her husband, in for a tour and introduced them to the Board at the beginning of the meeting.
President's Report - Kay called the meeting to order.
Treasurer's Report - Gordon indicated that we have approximately $1,000.00 in the checking account and $29,765.00 in the savings account. The mortgage on the house is now down to $5,000.00.
Renovation Report - Maryjo reported that 1) the plasterers are beginning work on the old kitchen; 2) Mike Pauli needs to finish the wiring in the old kitchen; 3) repairs to the front porch are finished (thanks to Mike for fixing the pillar); 4) Mike crawled under the floor of the old kitchen and finds it to be in stable condition - the main log seems to have bowed but it is solid; there are two layers of wood flooring in that room; 5) work in the attic is on hold until cooler weather.
Maryjo also reported that the landscaping committee met on June 4 and discussed what they would like to see as far as landscaping goes - the main requirements are low maintenance, historically correct plants, Carolyn said she has myrtle, forsythia and lily of the valley she will donate; Chuck McClaugherty reported that the trees in the yard are all silver maples and as of this time are OK - he suspects in 5 to 10 years we will have to have them cut down; Maryjo suggested we try to find someone who would buy the bricks in the walkways - we plan to use stepping stones from the stones that are piled near the well; Ginny suggested we need a railing for the steps on Haines - Mike suggested we might find some wrought iron at a salvage shop that would be inexpensive.
Robb reported that we now are the proud owners of the vacant lot next to the house. It went through the second Sheriff's sale in early June and no one else bid on it. Consequently, we can start to make plans for the parking area.
Architect Gary Duvall of City Design in Canton gave us an estimate of $1,300.00 for doing drawings for the handicapped bathroom and ramp and the parking lot. We would have to pay for permits, replatting and surveying in addition to that charge. Mike moved and Carolyn seconded that we have Gary do the drawings. All approved. Robb then moved that we authorize $1,700.00 in additional expenses now for the extra items so that we can do them whenever needed without having to wait for the next board meeting. Maxine seconded the motion. All approved. Mike will contact Gary. Gordon will contact Bob Akins to do the survey so that the two lots can be replatted.
Education Report - Martha would like to have a board member be in charge of Carnation Days activities, the Lamplight Program, and School Programs (one for each project) and then we could gather some outsiders to serve on the committees. She would like to expand the Education Committee to include some one-day camps for students - ideas are history day, underground railroad day. She is planning an Education Committee meeting on Sept. 17 at 9:00 during one of our normal workdays. Martha also indicated that we received $416.75 in student tour fees this school year.
Chuck Hill, a former student of Maryjo's, will be bringing his family to tour the building this Saturday, July 2.
Carnation Week House Tours - Kay reported that 1) Beth will do a program for children on Underground Railroad Music one evening during Carnation Week. A definite day has not yet been chosen; 2) Joann Dagenhardt is contacting spinners and weavers to do demonstrations during Carnation Week; 3) the Tightly Wound String Bank will play on the 14th; 4) Kay asked for other suggestions - chair caning and a dulcimer group were mentioned; 5) a display to be decided will be located in the Gallery. Maxine passed around a sheet for volunteers to help at the house during Open House times. Ginny passed around a sheet asking for volunteers for Carnation Days in the Park. Please sign up for one (or both) if you can spare the time. We would really appreciate it.
Fundraising - No report
New Business - 1) Beth Gray asked if we would be interested in three large picture frames that her father had made - they are beautiful! We all agreed to accept the donation. Thanks so much, Beth; 2) Kay stated the Martin Luther King Parade went well - she and Robb drove cars and Andrew Hyde, Heather Schafer and Martha McClaugherty passed out candy; 3) Elayne Dunlap indicated she does not feel she has time to be a Board Member, so Kay asked for us to think about others who might be interested; 4) Elayne put an article in the Review recently about our family history project; 5) A committee has been formed to research our group and the Mabel Hartzell group combining - members are Patricia, Jenni and Robb from our Board, and Joe Zelasko, Don Schafer and Gordon Harrison from Mabel Hartzell's Board; 6) Kay received a call from William Mays, great-great-grandson of Matthew Ridgeway Haines, who has diaries of Mabel Summer Haines and wondered if we would like them. Carolyn didn't know offhand who Mabel is, but the Board agreed that we would love to have them if they are of the correct time period since she had Alliance area ties.
Dates to Remember - July 2nd and 16th - 9:00 to 12:00 - work days
July 25th - next Board Meeting
Adjournment - Robb moved that we adjourn and Carolyn seconded the motion. All approved.
Respectfully submitted,
Ginny Daniel, Secretary
