ALLIANCE AREA PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Minutes of the Meeting - June 26, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at the Haines House

In attendance - Maryjo Hepler, Gordon Harrison, Mike Aeling, Carolyn Miller, Martha McClaugherty, Patricia Sacha, Beth Daniel, Michelle Collins-Sibley, Robb Hyde, Maxine Haupt, Frank Barrett, Beth Gray and Ginny Daniel.  Pat Lewis and Kay Brown were excused.  

President's Report - Martha opened the meeting. 

Treasurer's Report - Gordon reported $1,217.00 had been paid to the architect for drawing up plans for the bathroom and parking lot and approximately the same amount had been paid to Bob Akins for surveying.  In answer to Martha's request from last month, he said the average cost of mortgage, utilities and insurance in 2005 was $572.00 per month.  In the first six months of 2006, the average has been $737.00 per month.  The cost of the mortgage has been $298.00 per month and we will finish paying it off this year.

Renovation -  Maryjo reported: 1) Martha and Ginny signed the new deed to combine the two parcels into one; 2) she has requested information from the Ohio Preservation Office and the Association of Living History Farms and Cultural Museums regarding how to restore the well and old kitchen floor;  3) Dave Hoover will seed and plant forsythia on the west side of the house soon; 4) painting has begun in the attic; 5) the gutter covers we have on portions of the gutters have failed - we need to have covers on all the gutters to keep leaves and seeds out of them; Gordon will check with Boyd & Hawkins about doing them; 6) we need to write on the box when furnace filters are changed and then change them on a regular schedule so they don't get forgotten; 7) Aid Pest Control has been in once a week for several weeks to get rid of our critters; 8) the fire extinguisher has been refilled thanks to Mr. Blasiman; 9) we are waiting for the Planning Commission to review our plans for the parking lot and bathroom - one estimate has been received so far for the bathroom; 10) workdays - July 1 - 9-12; July 13 - 7 p.m.; Aug. 5 - cleaning party.

Education -  Maxine reported:  1) she and Kay will prepare an assessment questionnaire for teachers; 2) she and Kay would like to do away with our permission slips for school groups since the schools provide one, Martha stated Attorney Hunter feels we definitely need to have our own permission slip for school groups as well as the students having to have the school permission slip; 3) during Carnation Week there will be a trio performing on the 13th, Michelle Collins-Sibley will do spinning on the 20th, and on the ____ there will be a caning demonstration.  Robb will check into other music.  Michelle will talk to Debbie Lotsof re: designing costumes (we do have access to some from Judy Sterling at the present time); the Alliance Garden Club will provide flowers for several rooms; 4) Carolyn donated dishes for our use (thank you Carolyn!); 5) it was suggested we should provide a map with directions to Mabel Hartzell to our visitors; 6) it was also suggested that the room signs should be updated Martha and Robb will work on that; 7) our holiday Open House will be December 10th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.; 8) plans for next year include a history day camp and a formal interpretive plan; 9) docent training was held May 24th with several new docents being trained.

Fund Raising and Publicity - The Alliance Heritage brochure is now available at the Chamber Office - there is a page devoted to the Haines House.  Beth Daniel will be working on a newsletter.

Community Involvement (includes membership): Robb drove a car in the Martin Luther King Parade (thanks, Robb!).

Archives and Collection Care: No report.

Alliance Historical Society Liaison Committee: No report.

New Business: Ginny reported on an e-mail she had received from Bob Lukens, Public Relations Manager of the Chicago Southland Convention & Visitors Bureau who was asking for information about our site - she will e-mail him with information given by board members.

Next meeting date:  July 24th at 7:00 p.m. at the house.
