ALLIANCE AREA PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Minutes of the Meeting - June 28, 2004 at 7:00 p.m.

In attendance - Robb Hyde, Kay Brown, Gordon Harrison, Pat Lewis, Jennie Crist, Carolyn Miller, Danese Martin, Frank Barrett, Maxine Haupt, Patricia Sacha and Ginny Daniel.  Patricia Sacha's friend, Jennifer Couillez, visited.

Kay introduced Bill Robinson and Alicia Twyman of the Stark County Park District who gave us an overview of the Rotational Exhibit Program which they are instituting.  Their goal is to bring in more visitors to local museums by providing monthly rotations of exhibits of interest to the public.  It will enable community members and organizations to share talents and resources, and reduce work and costs by having ready-made exhibits to display.  It will eliminate the need for local museums to provide storage space for large exhibits after they are taken down, and will provide for greater marketing of exhibits through other sites, newspaper articles and websites.  The Board agreed to review the contract and hopefully participate in the project.

Treasurer's Report - Gordon reported 1) we received approximately $200.00 from our share of the antiques sale - some of the items were donated by the Weimers who asked that the profits from them be earmarked for the Mabel Hartzell Museum; 2) we received a $400.00 donation from the Town & Country Garden Club for plantings to be done after the repointing is finished; 3) we had expenses to Keith House for plastering, to the lawn service for mowing and to Cunningham's for carpet for the office; and 5) we are now tax-exempt and will receive a refund of taxes paid the past two years.

Education Report - Robb reported for Martha that 1) John Whitacre has agreed to perform musical selections during one of our open houses in Carnation Week and that she will organize others to also share their talents during the open houses; 2) Kyle Schwarz will be preparing a video of the upstairs to be shown to people who cannot climb steps, she will also prepare a program to be shown on Channel 11 to advertise our open houses during Carnation Week.

Renovation Report - Robb reported that the repointing will get underway in 6 to 8 weeks from now.

Fundraising Committee - 1) Robb reported that Evan and Suzanne Morris have donated $27,000.00 to us for our endowment fund; 2) Jennie reported on the Antiques Sale - the committee has determined that in the future we will not include household items in the sale; approximately $200.00 was realized from the sale.

New Business - 1) Pat Lewis reported that the children at the Martin Luther King Parade last weekend really enjoyed the coloring books she distributed.  She would like to be able to distribute about 100 next year; she suggested that we might consider sponsoring a multi-cultural dinner and preparing a recipe book as future activities; 2) Ginny will contact Jeff Hartzell about Carnation Days in the Park; 3) we need to have information in the Review about our Open Houses during Carnation Week; 4) Sign up sheets were passed around for Carnation Days in the Park booth workers and for Carnation Week Open House workers; 5) Jennie will talk to John Blaser about our being able to post a sign on Main Street indicating the location of the Haines House during our Open Houses in Carnation Week; 6) Jennie will also talk to John Blaser about a variance so we can install a permanent sign in front of the house; Robb is working on a design for it; 7) Jennie will get signs to be posted on doors concerning concealed weapons; 8) Robb is also working on a tour brochure.

There will be no workday this Saturday, July 3.  We will have a workday July 17 from 9:00 to 12:00.

Next meeting date - July 26, 2004 at 7:00 p.m.
