ALLIANCE AREA PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Minutes of the Meeting - July 25, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. 

In attendance - Maryjo Hepler, Gordon Harrison, Kay Brown, Jenni Crist, Maxine Haupt, Robb Hyde, Mike Aeling, Carolyn Miller, Frank Barrett, Patricia Sacha and Ginny Daniel. 

President's Report - Kay called the meeting to order. 

Treasurer's Report - Gordon indicated that the normal bills have been paid this month plus Dana Tournoux was paid for his work on the old kitchen.  Donations from tours totaled $30.00.

Renovation Report - Maryjo reported that 1) Gary Duvall, architect, is planning to come this week to plan for the vacant lot; 2) Elizabeth Cartwright is going to make the drapes for the parlor; 3) Bob Campbell and his crew will finish the repointing by August 12 and have the plastic off the windows, they will also caulk around the window frames and replace the gutters and downspouts at that time, they will finish later after Carnation Week; 4) Dana Tournoux will plaster the attic in the winter when it is cooler; prior to his work, Mike Pauli will finish the wiring and Mike Aeling will finish the floor; 5) work on the old kitchen will continue before Carnation Week - the ceiling has been painted and primer is on the walls; the woodwork still needs to be caulked, the floor needs to be worked on, and finish coats of paint need to be put on the walls and woodwork - the walls will be alabaster with sage green trim; 6) the landscaping committee will not meet until sometime after Carnation Week

Gordon reported that we now have the deed to the lot next door in our name, the next step is to apply for tax-free status; Bob Akins has surveyed it; Gordon will talk to the City Engineer about combining the two lots; there are tree roots in the sanitary sewer line that runs to the alley, we need to decide what we want to do about solving the problem.

Education Report -  Martha was not present - no report was given

Carnation Week House Tours - 1) Maxine passed out a schedule of workers for the Open Houses, special activities include Tytely Wounde Stryng Band, Underground Railroad Music by Beth Gray, chair caning demonstration, spinning demonstration and possibly quilting; 2) the information about our tours is not correct in the brochure - Jenni will check with the Review to see if we can get an article which will emphasize our Open House hours; 3) Maryjo mentioned trunks containing items of historical interest about the Underground Railroad are available from the Ohio Historical Society - Maxine said she thought Martha had already ordered one, Maryjo will talk with her, Maxine moved that we order a trunk to be on display during Carnation Week, Robb seconded the motion and all approved, the cost is $25.00; 4) Robb has photos of work that has been done this past year, he will pick some and Ginny will do a new display board for Days in the Park; 5) we once again have free space for a table at Days in the Park.

Fundraising - No report

New Business - 1) Carolyn is trying to contact members of Mabel Summer Haines' family to get more information about her; 2) Gordon has had some extra keys made so that we can give them out to people who need them; 3) Kay made a new board member information list which she passed out; 4) Kay passed around a thank you letter from the Martin Luther King Parade Steering Committee for our participation in the annual parade; 5) Robb mentioned that several Haines descendants toured the House in July - William Meyers and his granddaughter, William's daughter has Sarah Haines' photos, some furniture and a clock; three direct descendants of the Grants; and John Cavanaugh who is related to Stacy Grant and the Hilles' and Harris' from Mt. Union area

Old Business - 1) there was some discussion as to what we should do with the fun flags that were donated to us to sell - it was decided that we would need to open the packages and display them during Carnation Week to increase our chances of selling them; we will have notecards, bookmarks, and ornaments on sale at the House during the week

Dates to Remember -  July 30th, August 6th, August 13th - 9:00 to 12:00 - work
                        days to get ready for Carnation Week
August 22nd - next Board Meeting

Adjournment - Jenni moved that we adjourn and Carolyn seconded the motion.  All approved.
