ALLIANCE AREA PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Minutes of the July 23, 2001 meeting

Members of the Haines House Underground Railroad Project met at Christ United Methodist Church, Alliance on July 23, 2001. President, Robb Hyde, called the meeting to order at 7:10 PM. We began by introducing ourselves.

Robb recapped the events of the last few months:

At our last meeting we agreed that $42,000 would be our final offer to the Straubhauers, and that if they did not accept it by September 1, 2001, it would be withdrawn. Late in June our attorney, Bob Hunter, Jr. received a call from the Straubhauers ' attorney, Gardner, stating: "We couldn't decide whether we wanted to talk about the Straubhauer case or put bamboo shoots under our fingernails!" On July 2 Bob Hunter received a purchase agreement from them. It has been signed and a $1000.00 down payment has been made. The Straubhaurs will finance us for up to 90 days after the closing date of August 10. We have to raise $41,000 by November 1, 2001.!!!!!!!!

The Straubhauers would also like an agreement that all lawsuits between them and the Alliance Historical Society will be dropped.

Treasurer's Report:

The balance in our checking account is: $4, 336.75. after a $1000.00 check was written for the down payment on the Haines House.

The Executive Committee has met a couple of times in the last two months. We have spoken with Charlie Grove, Joe Mastroiani and the Alliance Community Foundation about securing funds for the purchase. Gerard Mastroiani, one of the owners of Alliance Ventures will co-sign a loan for up to $27,000. Attorney Mike Ogline represents someone in Canton who is interested in donating too.

Pat Sacha, 1st VP, passed out a revised Case for Support-Executive Summary that includes a history of the house, a summary of our plans, a three year plan outline and a summary of our fund-raising strategy. She also passed out a sample letter designed to give to prospective donors about our "Secure the Past-Provide for the Future Campaign" fund-raising strategy. It includes a donation/pledge form and a Case for Support. Pat noted that she and Robb met with Paula Goldman, former Director of the Annual Fund at Mount Union College. Paula helped them focus on ways to fund raise within the next 90 days.

Other miscellaneous news: Jesse Harry spoke with Mark at WDPN about the possibility of a live broadcast on clean-up day. Councilman Brant Luther has suggested a Block Party on the day. The Health Inspector, Randall Flynn, has been approached about tearing down the wooden and concrete building on the property. Slater has agreed to do the real estate appraisal pro bono. Ginny Daniel was going to look into having a display at Carnation Days in the Park.
