ALLIANCE AREA PRESERVATION SOCIETY
Minutes of the Meeting - August 30, 2004 at 7:00 p.m.
In attendance - Robb Hyde, Kay Brown, Jennie Crist, Carolyn Miller, Danese Martin, Frank Barrett, Patricia Sacha, Martha McClaugherty, Maryjo Hepler, Beth Gray and Ginny Daniel.
President's Report - Kay announced that the house looked great during Carnation Week and that all went well during Open Houses.
Treasurer's Report - Gordon was out of town - no report given.
Education Report - Martha 1) handed out a report of Carnation Week activities - we had 496 visitors with a total of $718.01 in donations, we sold 1 t-shirt, 2 bookmarks, 5 packs of notecards, 6 Alliance history books, 5 memberships and 4 calendars; we received $19.06 in donations at Days in the Park and had expenses of $18.77; 2) has written thank you notes to the people involved in volunteering at the house; 3) reported that Ilona Campbell-Mihar of the Canton Weavers and Spinners Guild donated a spinning wheel and flax wheel to the house; 4) suggested we give a key to house to Dorothy Deioma whose daughter is a professional photographer and would like to take photos of the house - all approved.
Patricia Sacha has a copier she will donate to the house.
Renovation Report - Maryjo 1) thanked everyone who helped clean the house prior to Carnation Week - it went very quickly and really looked nice;
2) has several questions - re: handicapped ramp, light above back door; power cord for the computer (Robb will bring one); 3) said Cindy Garnes is willing to donate a large loom to us, but we decided it was too large for us to have on display all the time - Frank suggested she call the Carroll County Historical Society to see if they could use it; 4) said Mike Aellig is willing to serve on the board - Kay will contact him and invite him to attend our meetings and then he can be nominated to the board in the spring elections; 5) Robb will talk to Grove's about getting a new refrigerator; 6) thanked everyone for agreeing to getting a larger rug for the library - it looks very nice; 7) said we need to decide on a rug for the parlor after the paper is up; 8) said Michelle Collins-Sibley's husband would volunteer to build shelves for the office if we would provide the lumber; 9) discussed possibility of block party - it was decided to hold off until next spring or summer when the weather is better and the outside of the house would be in better shape.
Fundraising Committee - Robb 1) said he is still awaiting approval for the repointing of the bricks; 2) said he will be sending out the fall fund drive letter soon - discussion was had on the possibility of doing a quarterly newsletter including wish list items and thank you's for donations, we still need additional money for the matching grant; 3) moved that we OK up to $250.00 for stationery and stamps for the fall mailing - Carolyn moved, Beth seconded, all in favor; 4) will talk to people along with Evan Morris to encourage other families to donate as the Morris' did; 5) said that he took Scott Oelslager through the house during Carnation Week - Robb was encouraged to write a proposal to receive money from the state & is doing that.
Elayne Dunlap suggested a family history project as a moneymaker - we would provide scrapbooks with pages in them for families to fill in with a charge of $15 or $20 - we would keep histories in our library. Carolyn will talk to Karen Perone about what they are doing about family histories.
New Business - 1) 3rd Saturday (Sept. 18th) will be a brainstorming workday for ideas on what we need in terms of a wish list for items for each room, everyone is welcome to come, bring pictures of period appropriate pieces if you wish; 2) Carolyn mentioned George Hays from the Salem Library might do a program on the diary of the Hise family's underground railroad activities for our annual spring meeting; 3) the Stark Park's committee is focusing on the Stark Electric Railroad right now, we are waiting for them to focus on activities of the underground railroad; 4) Mount Union is holding a volunteering fair on Sept. 21 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. to acquaint students with volunteer opportunities in Alliance, Martha and Maryjo will man our table, everyone is asked to donate cookies for the students to munch on (is a way to a student's willingness to volunteer through his love for food?) - please get them to Martha at 1623 S. Freedom (call and make arrangements with her about dropping them off - 821-6020); 5) Friends of Freedom Convention is Oct. 15-17 in Independence - cost is $95.00; 6) Stark Community Foundation's annual meeting is Sept. 22 - cost is $30.00; 7) another suggestion for our Spring annual meeting - 2 women from Jefferson's family (one white, one black) who give presentations; 8) Robb wanted to know what our thoughts were on the Alliance Historical Society, the Castle, Science Hill and our group joining forces - after discussion Martha moved that we authorize Robb, Jennie and Patricia to work with Alliance Historical Society toward a possible merger, Frank seconded the motion and all approved; and 9) Howard Rubin will be at our September meeting to give a short presentation.
Don't forget September 18th - brainstorming workday from 9:00 to make wishlist of items we would like to purchase or have donated for the various rooms - please come and help provide input.
Next meeting date - September 27th at 7:00 p.m.
